Frequently asked questions
Short, honest answers about how BMM treats your mods, your game folder, and your Patreon subscription.
Is BMM free? What do Player and Supporter add?
The core manager — unlimited library, hardlink activation, 5 load-outs, the duplicate finder with automatic clean-up, BeamMP server prep, mod update checks, and driving stats — is free forever. Player ($3/mo on Patreon) adds unlimited load-outs, one-click mod updates, Always On load-outs, the dependency check, the Live Dashboard, conflict detection, and the 7 premium themes. Supporter ($9/mo) adds everything in Player plus Update All (every outdated mod in one click), access to the Supporter-only BMM BeamMP server, and top billing on the Supporter Wall.
Why does Windows SmartScreen warn me?
BMM is currently unsigned, so Windows shows an “unknown publisher” notice on first run. Click “More info” → “Run anyway”. Every user runs the same installer built from the same code; signing is planned as the project grows.
Does BMM mess with my game folder?
Only in ways you can see. BMM adds and removes its own links in the mods folder. When BeamNG closes, it also imports new mods it finds there into Mod Storage (you can turn this off in Settings) — the mod stays active, now linked from your library. It never changes anything while BeamNG is running, and the only game files it ever edits are the two you explicitly click for: Live Dashboard setup (which backs the file up first) and Rebuild Mod Database (which sends it to the Recycle Bin).
What's a hardlink, and why does activating use zero disk space?
A hardlink makes the same file appear in two folders at once — no copy is made. Activating a mod links it from Mod Storage into the game folder instantly. (Across different drives, BMM falls back to a copy automatically.)
Where do my mods actually live?
In your Mod Storage folder — by default “BeamNG Mod Library” in your user folder, changeable in Settings. It's yours: plain .zip files you can browse in Explorer any time.
Why must Mod Storage live outside the game folder?
BeamNG's launcher “Clear Cache” moves everything out of the game's current folder — if your library lived there, every mod would be orphaned. BMM warns you if you pick a folder inside the game for exactly this reason.
What's the 5 load-out limit on Free?
Free accounts can keep 5 load-outs (named mod sets). Only unlocked load-outs count toward the limit. Player and Supporter remove the cap.
How does Connect with Patreon work? Do I need to stay online?
You click Connect, approve on patreon.com, and BMM stores a signed entitlement — no keys to paste. It re-checks roughly twice a day and keeps working offline for 14 days between checks, so a flaky connection never locks you out.
Does BMM support BeamMP?
Yes. The BeamMP Servers page lists public servers, shows how many of each server's mods you already have, and preps them in one click so BeamMP uses your copies instead of re-downloading them. BMM can't join a server for you — BeamMP does that part. Supporters also get access to the Supporter-only BMM BeamMP server (search “BMM” in the server browser), and if you host your own server on this PC, My Server manages its mods from the same library.
Installer or portable — which should I pick?
The installer is the normal choice: Start-menu entry, easy updates. The portable .exe runs from anywhere without installing — handy for testing or locked-down machines. Both are the same app.
How do I update BMM? Do my mods and load-outs survive?
The installer version checks for new BMM versions and installs them with one click; the portable version tells you when one is out and links here. Your library, load-outs, settings, and Patreon connection all carry over untouched.
If I uninstall BMM, what happens to my mods?
Nothing. Your mods live in Mod Storage, which uninstalling never touches. Reinstall later and re-import to pick up where you left off.
My antivirus flagged the download — why?
Unsigned apps from small developers sometimes trip heuristic scanners. The installer is built from the same code every user runs. If your scanner quarantines it, restore it and add an exception — or grab the portable build.
Can BMM break my game?
It's built not to: it never touches anything while the game is running, and it never edits game files except the two actions you explicitly confirm (Live Dashboard setup, which backs the file up first, and Rebuild Mod Database, which sends it to the Recycle Bin). Deleting a mod sends the .zip to the Recycle Bin — not into the void. Worst case, deactivate everything and you're back to vanilla.
A mod shows as “conflicting” — what does that mean?
It means two active mods include a file with the same name. Most of the time that's harmless and the game runs fine — BMM lists them for troubleshooting only, so check this list if a mod isn't working as expected. Conflict detection is a Player feature.
How do mod updates work?
BMM checks your repository mods for newer versions on every tier — click Check for updates any time. Player adds a one-click Update button on each mod and an optional automatic check at launch. Supporter adds Update All, which updates every outdated mod in one go.
What does the dependency check do?
Some mods need another mod to work. BMM reads what authors write in their mod descriptions, flags active mods whose required mods aren't active, activates the ones you already own in one click, and warns you before launch. Because it relies on what authors write, treat it as a helpful hint rather than a guarantee. The dependency check is a Player feature.
What's the Live Dashboard, and are my stats private?
Your last-session and lifetime driving stats are free on every tier. Player adds the Live Dashboard: real-time gauges while you drive, great on a second monitor, with an option to pass the data through to SimHub or other dash apps. Everything stays on your PC — BMM doesn't upload your stats anywhere.
Can I back up my library setup?
Yes. Backup & Restore saves your load-outs, tags, favorites, notes and custom covers to a single .bmmbackup file — handy for a reinstall or a second PC. Mod files themselves aren't included; they stay in your Mod Storage folder.
Will this work if I pirate/torrent BeamNG?
BMM is not tested, and will never be tested, to see if it works on a pirated version of the game. You should not pirate BeamNG.drive. It is a marvelous, beautiful, fantastic, and impressive game and the BeamNG devs deserve every purchase they get. THE GAME IS ONLY $25 AND IT'S BEEN A STEAL FOR YEARS! lol. If you haven't bought it yet, just do it.
